The Only Side French Braid Tutorial You Need

The usual French braid may work for ladies with long hair, but when you’ve got the short hairstyle that’s so on trend these days, your plaits tend to be a bit more creative. Playing with placement and texture instead of length, the side French braid is the perfect solution for shorter haired girls who want to get in on the braid action. We wanted to break down the style and get a real step-by-step, so we turned to Edgar Parra, stylist at Sally Hershberger, for help. Below is his side French braid tutorial, and you can follow the steps above for a visual!

Step 1: Section your hair from behind your ear and forward, essentially where you’d place a headband. If you have little flyaway hairs, you can blow dry the edges of your hairline to straighten them out first. Step 2: Use an inch section to start the braid. Criss-cross left to right to begin braiding, and then pick up more hair as you go, pulling the braid towards where you want it to be placed on your head. Step 3: Continue all the way down, braiding your hair tightly (you’ll loosen it up a bit later). Step 4: Secure the braid with a clear elastic, or if you don’t have one, tease the bottom of the braid with a fine tooth comb for hold. Step 5: Pin the braid underneath your loose hair at the nape of your neck, and move your loose hair over the braid to cover the bottom. Step 6: Gently pull the top of the French braid to loosen up the crown for a more disheveled look.
